The Course Backstory

I have been teaching 11 years at a Career & Technical center in Cheektowaga, NY. The course is focused on video and audio production and is titled Video Production & Recording Arts. The class is a two-year program for 11th and 12th-grade students. The length of each class is just over two hours and meets every day during the week. The class is set up where there is a studio space and also a classroom that has updated furniture, ten ipads, and twenty iMac computers.

The students in the class have varying experience with the equipment and the students also have different interests within the course. Some of the students want to focus more on video production and others want to focus more on audio production. My challenge was engaging and motivating students when the class was covering topics that were not interesting or falling into their individual goals and interests.

I knew I had to change up the class somehow to engage and challenge them. How?
